2016 WALKS

January 24th - Peter Bradley AGM & Raffle Raised £24

February 21st - Susan Charsley The walk will start as usual at 12.30. Meet at the track opposite Warners Farm Howe Street at the roundabout junction of the B1008 and Essex Regiment Way. Plenty of parking along the edge of the concrete road. We will do a loop of approximately 5 to 6 miles, probably a familiar route to most, across to Hartford End and Littley Green. Please bring packed lunch but there will be the option of calling into the Compasses PH for provisions, depending on the weather.

March 20th - Barrie & Janet Meet at the Hatfield Forest visitor car park for 12.30 start on 20th March.

Various ways to get to the car park, quite easy from the bottom of the hill in Takeley where you turn off the old A120 the sign is for Bush End and for Hatfield Forest, car park is half a mile from the old A120.

On Sundays there is a £5 car parking fee so suggest some car sharing, we have room for 2-3 extra people so do let us know if you would like to come with us. No toilet or other facilities at the car park.

Packed lunch needed.

April 24th 12.30 start. Approx. 5.5 miles No watering holes on the way so bring lunch.

Start at Clatterford End Map ref:TL 565068. Post code: CM5 0HT.

Through Fyfield on the B184, turn right into Moreton Road. 200 metres on left is a cul de sac where we can park. Car sharing could be an advantage.

There is a pub ... The Black Bull ... into which those requiring sustenance after the walk could call.

SUFFOLK - BURY ST EDMUNDS

Saturday 14th May 2016
Travel to Ickworth House on the A143 Bury St Edmunds to Haverhill Road - the entrance gate/lodge is from a village called Horringer
The full walk is around 6 miles and should be completed at around 3pm.

Sunday 15th May 7 miles.
Following breakfast walkers should leave the hotel car park turning right on the A1101 Mildenhall Road in the direction of Mildenhall passing through Fornham All Saints, Hengrave, Flempton, and Lackford. Just after Lackford turn right to follow the 'brown sign' indicating Anglo Saxon Village and West Stow (approximately four miles from the hotel) it is suggested that you allow three quarters of an hour to get there. Park at West Stow Country Park (Parking Fee £2 for over one hour from ticket machine)
Starting time for walk 11am. Starting point - the Visitor Centre for non -walkers there are shorter walks and other items of interest at the Visitor Centre and Anglo Saxon village. There is also a restaurant for coffee before the walk commences.
The walk will follow the Lark Valley Way and the River Lark to West Stow where we will then follow a track towards Forest Lodge and the Kings Forest. (Here we will stop to consume lunch which you will need to bring with you). We continue after lunch via forest tracks to join the Icknield Way and St Edmunds way to return to West Stow Country Park. (walk distance is around 5.5 miles).


June 26th - John & Christine

12.30 start from Broads Green TL 693125 to Pleshey Mound and return.

Leaders Angus and Les, for John and Christine.

July 17th - Frances & Tony The walk in July will start and end opposite the Red Lion pub in Great Sampford. Map OS Explorer 195 Braintree and Saffron Walden.
It's a circular walk of 6 miles and well described and marked out and very pleasant with many views over the surrounding countryside.

August 21st - Lis & Roger

The walk on Sunday 21st August will start from from Broomfield St Mary and St Leonard Parish Church car park. TL 705 105.

We have arranged for the car park to be open for us and is past the church on Church Green.

The walk will cover some of Broomfield away from the traffic with only two short bits of road walking.

You will find short cuts to the Hospital and the reopened footpath.
No pubs or restaurants will be passed so bring a packed lunch.


September 25th - Clare & Sylve

Distance: Just under 5 miles, 5 stiles

Parking: In front of church or in surrounding roads TL 897 190/ CO5 9TR

Start: 12.30 pm as usual

Directions: From Kelvedon take a right turn onto the B 1023, after passing under the A12 bridge.Take a left onto Kelvedon Road This turning is easy to miss as the hedge covers the sign at the moment!

Follow this narrow road and continue on Kelvedon Road as it turns left signed Messing. . Approaching the village the square church tower is visible.

Unfortunately there's not much space to park outside the church or in the main street. Probably best to car share as much as possible.
There are no facilities or cafes en route, but The Old Crown Pub in the village comes highly recommended.

Packed lunch is required.

The walk starts on concrete roads ( part of Birch airfield) and then follows field edges, with some green lanes through woods passing by an ancient rampart.


October 22nd/23rd Walks by Peter B + Others to help  

November 20th - Les and Angus

Circular Walk near Stock and Hanningfield reservoir

Start: 12.30 Stock Village Hall CP Common Road

( a left turn just past Greenwoods sign which is on right ) CM4 9NF

Length: 5.5 miles

Packed lunch required

December 11th A circular walk starting in High Stile, Gt Dunmow, on to Lt. Easton and returning along the Flitch Way (approx. 5 miles). Almost certainly, there will be mud.


Please park in High Stile - Grid ref 624219. From the Chelmsford direction, take B1256 from A120 roundabout after Barnston. Pass under A120 and straight on until your reach a further roundabout, approx 500yds, take left for Bishops Stortford. At next roundabout turn right, back towards Dunmow, leaving The Queen Victoria on your right. High Stile is Immediately on the right.

Please can we start promptly at 12.30 as the days are now so short.
